Lessons¶
Ten hands-on notebooks. Each one starts from a planning question and ends with a map or chart that answers it.
You can do the lessons in any order, because every notebook downloads its own data. For complete beginners, though, going in order works best.
Part 1: GIS with OpenStreetMap¶
- Your Study Area: city boundary, wards and your first maps
- Mapping the City from OpenStreetMap: buildings, roads, parks and amenities
- Street Network Analysis: intersection density, connectivity and street orientation
- The 15-Minute City: walking access to parks and schools
- Urban Form and Buildings: footprints, ground coverage and building shapes
Part 2: Remote sensing with satellite images¶
- Satellite Imagery Basics: finding and viewing Sentinel-2 images
- Green Cover and Built-up Areas: NDVI and NDBI by ward
- Urban Heat Island: land surface temperature from Landsat
- Urban Growth with Machine Learning: land cover classification and change over time
Part 3: Bringing it together¶
- Site Suitability (Capstone): where to put a new park, shared as an interactive web map
Bonus material¶
- Collecting Citizen Data with ODK and KoboToolbox: a no-code guide that takes you from a phone survey to a public map
