Summary: Notes on datasets, data sources, and data-related tools. Last updated: 2026-09-07

  • GeoLibre: A lightweight, cloud-native desktop GIS built with MapLibre GL JS and Tauri, announced by Qiusheng Wu on LinkedIn. Runs both in-browser and as a standalone cross-platform app under 30 MB; features MapLibre-powered mapping, local vector data import, project persistence, and plugins for basemaps, layer control, swipe comparison, street view, LiDAR support, and GeoAgent/GeoEditor tools. Version 0.5.0 added support for GeoJSON, Shapefiles, GeoPackage, GeoParquet, KML/KMZ, FlatGeobuf, PMTiles, MBTiles, GeoTIFF, Zarr, LiDAR point clouds, and ArcGIS services. See Remote_Sensing for related geospatial data tools. Keywords: desktop GIS, MapLibre, open source, cloud-native, LiDAR, geospatial data formats
  • TerraClimate: A dataset of monthly climate and climatic water balance for global terrestrial surfaces from 1950-present, at ~4-km (1/24th degree) spatial resolution. Combines high-resolution climate normals with time-varying reanalysis data; provides temperature, precipitation, wind speed, solar radiation, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, drought indices, and runoff, plus future projections (+2°C/+4°C warming scenarios) and a counterfactual no-anthropogenic-change scenario. Used for ecological/hydrological research such as streamflow modeling and climate change impact assessments. See Climate_Change. Keywords: climate data, water balance, global gridded dataset, drought index, evapotranspiration, climate projections
  • See SQL for notes on optimizing spatial queries in DuckDB.
  • See Climate_Change for the Groundsource flood occurrence dataset.
